Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Top 5 Times Twitter Rooted for Zalebs in 2023

As much as Mzansi Twitter enjoys clowning celebs like a dumpster fire circus, it does occasionally like to celebrate (and bask in) their achievements.

Throughout 2023, we’ve seen our favourite stars shining on both the local and international stage, and what better way to cap off the year than by highlighting their #winningmoments!

Take a look at the top five celebs who got the most love on Twitter/X in 2023:

5. Drake x Cassper Nyovest

Cassper Nyovest is arguably one of the most popular rappers in South Africa. Most of his songs receive a lot of airplay and love from his fanbase, including the ever popular “Siyathandana”, which features Boohle and Abidoza.

Across the pond, his Canadian counterpart Drake showed that he was a fan of Nyovest when he played “Siyathandana” while deejaying a set at a show in New York City back in January:

Immediately, Mzansi Twitter retweeted like crazy, with SA flag emojis, calls for Nyovest and Boohle to take notice, and pleas for Drake to collab with Nyovest filling up the timelines:

4. Drake x Kabza De Small

Speaking of Drake, the “Hotline Bling” hitmaker co-signed yet another SA musician: Kabza De Small (who, when he’s not choosing violence by making fun of women’s make-up skills, is a darn fine DJ and record producer in his own right).

On 6 July, Drake took to Instagram Stories to announce De Small as one of the producers on his “It’s All A Blur” tour – observe the following screenshot, as captured by Twitter user @TheInstigator:

Tweeps immediately hoorayed and huzzahed over this news, congratulating Drake (yes, DRAKE) for choosing to work with someone as prolific as De Small and helping to bring Amapiano to the world stage:

3. Uncle Waffles Meets Ciara

SA-based Swazi DJ, Uncle Waffles, has had a stellar year of note: she got to perform at the Coachella music festival, rock the Met Gala afterparty, receive endorsements by major brands like Ice Box … in other words, the gal’s getting herself wins per minute!

She even garnered a major shoutout from US songstress, Ciara, who showed Waffles some love back in April:

It was a feel-good moment to see Waffles getting love from the “Goodies” hitmaker, but it was a feel-great day altogether when the former shared a TikTok of her dancing (along with a selfie) with the latter:

We’re a sucker for moments like these, and apparently so was Twitter, who knew this truly defined Waffles as a global superstar:

2. Tyla Makes Global Splash

Joining Uncle Waffles in the global superstar ranks this year is Tyla: the Johannesburg songstress is riding high on a wave of success, thanks to her popular single, “Water”.

A song which, BTW, made it onto the Spotify Top 40 global chart in October – info that Tyla happily shared with her fellow South Africans:

1. Black Coffee Rocks Madison Square Garden

A sold-out show? Great!

A sold-out show at the iconic Madison Square Garden arena in New York City? Great times two!

A South African artist putting on a sold-out show at MSG? Great times INFINITY!!

On 7 October, Black Coffee made history by becoming the first South African DJ to headline a major, sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. To emphasise the awesomeness of this achievement, he took to Twitter/X the following day with this epic tweet:

As you can tell, peeps filled up the timelines with praise for Black Coffee, thanking him for putting a spotlight on Mzansi and, for those in attendance that night, showing out in the best fashion:
